Collapse Assignment 1
After researching about Easter Island I found many interesting things from its culture to its collapse. The island was populated with Polynesian people who have mysteriously disappeared at a point in time. But one main thing that really stood out to me in interest was the forest destruction on Easter island. Basically on the island almost every tree and its species became extinct which made Easter island look as if it was a prairie. The whole reason of the forest destruction some believe was a climate change on the island and some say that it was done due to a deforestation done by the islanders. Even if either way both ways was crucial to the island because if the islanders did deforest their island then they were the reason for the decline in their civilization in the 17th and 18th century. But besides all that with the tress being gone it also had affected the soil grounds on the island and the island pretty much had a loss of vegetation and the people on the island mainly ate chickens and other nearby creatures like rats. In other words these people became people who only ate meat and didn’t consume any kind of vegetable after the loss of the trees. The whole point of some people saying that the loss of the trees were due to the climate change can be debatable because currently in the world today our population of people are fighting global warming which in many kinds of cases climate change feels as it is shifting. Many years ago I can remember when I was younger it’ll be warmer in August but in the previous year 2008 the weather feels kind of funny and even today in the month of June some days feel a little to cold to call it near summer. One other thing that caught my interest was the statues (moai) the islanders build. The statues basically symbolize a deceased long ear chief or important person. It amazes me how the statues are symbolized, it shows they appreciated the person enough to build a statue for them its kind of like a praise or ritual of some sort. Its kind of like how in the U. S today important people are praised for their efforts and put out into the world through the use of technology and the media just to get the importance of the person into the viewers minds. The only big difference between Easter Island and the United States is that on the island there wasn’t very much technology and their resources where very limited, which made their island very old fashioned which also gives it reason to why they may have become disappeared along with everything else the climate change and the loss of the resources in the process. While in the U. S we have the technoloy to save lives and endure things like climate changes and our resources are always their food never becomes a issue but can be harmful to us then in the island their food were natural right from the source.
